● abilities: Newt is a wizard, which means he has the ability to do magic. Wizards have slightly different physiologies than non-magical humans, causing them to react differently to things like attacks from magical creatures, and grants them a longer lifespan (generally around 30-40 years longer than regular humans). He was raised in the wizarding world, with different customs than the human world and a penchant for using magic for just about everything in day-to-day life. He has received training from Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, and is a capable user of magical spells and potions.
Newt has a specific skillset, being a highly-talented magizoologist. This particular well-honed skillset can be found outlined here on the Harry Potter Wiki.
● strengths:
ϟ compassionate/empathetic: Newt has an astounding capacity for compassion and empathy, and a very peaceful, calming nature. Honed by practice with sensitive magical creatures, Newt has the ability and desire to figure out what is upsetting others and to assuage that fear. He cares about people and creatures who either don't have voices to speak up for themselves, or who can't because of abuse or fear. This empathy is definitely not reserved for creatures, as he has also shown this same compassion to a young girl in Sudan, and to Credence Barebone, both of whom were abused children, when they were in danger of being consumed by an Obscurus.
ϟ accepting/open-minded: On at least one occasion in the movie, Newt openly calls the USA's policy of not befriending or marrying non-magical people 'backwards,' and besides being consistently polite to non-magical folk, he openly and without hesitation befriends one of them. Newt is also open-minded in that he is willing to look for the best in magical creatures that other people consider dangerous and write off.
ϟ moral/courageous: Newt has a very strong sense of right and wrong, and even when his moral code doesn't align with social norms or what authorities tell him, he still stands up for what he believes in. Whether that means refusing to even try to comprehend why a person might use an Obscurial to attain power because an Obscurial arises from child abuse, or vehemently protecting the rights of helpless animals even in the face of the law, he doesn't hesitate.
ϟ intelligent/curious: With a long history of research into magical creatures, the history of magic, and all manner of other topics, Newt has traveled the world to expand his knowledge of magical creatures, their behaviours, and how they can help humans, either directly or indirectly by contributing to curative potions.
● weaknesses:
ϟ impulsive/thoughtless: Especially when it comes to the well-being of magical creatures, Newt often acts first and thinks or asks questions later. He doesn't pay any mind to the laws of the land or even, sometimes, the well-being of the people around him (who he is quite convinced can take care of themselves, thank you), and has no hesitation about diving headfirst into unexpected, dangerous situations. This has landed him in a lot of hot water over time. This also extends to being quite blunt and overly honest in situations where this can either get him in trouble or hurt the feelings of his friends.
ϟ detached/wanderlust: While Newt is compassionate and empathetic as a person, he doesn't always understand or appropriately interpret the feelings of the people around him, or what effect his actions will have on them and their lives. While he does try to make things right, that doesn't always do much good. Besides this, Newt has a very distinct case of wanderlust. He is a researcher and an explorer, and he never really stops looking for new things to learn in his chosen field, which means that he often leaves behind people and places he's come to love.
ϟ eccentric/awkward: Newt comments that people don't tend to like him because he's annoying, and this is definitely at least sometimes the case. He is an awkward person, with body language that works well with magical creatures, but can be incredibly off-putting to humans - his hunched shoulders, tendency to avoid eye contact, and the direct and often blunt way he speaks can be very difficult to put up with.
